The National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system categorizes LTL freight into 18 classes (Class 50 to Class 400) based on density (weight per cubic foot), stowability, handling, and liability. Higher classes = lower density = higher freight rates.

What is LTL Freight Class?

Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) freight class is a standardized system established by the NMFC (National Motor Freight Classification) to categorize shipments for pricing. Every LTL shipment is assigned a class from Class 50 (densest, cheapest) to Class 400(lightest, most expensive). The primary factor for most commodities is density.

How to Calculate Freight Density

Density (PCF) = Total Weight (lbs) ÷ Total Volume (cubic feet). Volume is calculated as (Length × Width × Height) ÷ 1,728. A higher density means a lower, cheaper freight class. Use this free 2026 LTL freight class calculator to instantly determine your NMFC class.
